Imago Competition: “Write UCT Write!”

Grasshopper metamorphosis

Imago (n): The final stage in the metamorphosis of an insect

At the end of 2008, at the launch of the first edition of the resurrected Imago, we mentioned that the next edition would contain a competition. The competition details were vague at the time of the launch but, now almost perfected, we bring them to you here:

Write a poem using the word imago as a topic or starting point. Remember that imago has many different meanings (see link below for some ideas). We do not expect you to confine your creativity to the journal’s original idea of what imago is, though we’re sticking with the bugs.

How does it work? Unfortunately, due to our immense popularity and spam count, we cannot allow more than one entry per person under the Imago competition (TM). However, we are also accepting other submissions (the usual poems, prose fiction, mini essays) for the same edition, the competition will merely form one part of Imago No.2. Of course, the best piece wins! Simple.

What can I win? The top three competition entries will automatically be published in Imago No.2, 2009. The winner will receive a signed copy of Load Shedding: Writing on and over the edge of South Africa edited by Sarah Nuttall and Liz McGregor.

Who will judge? We have a specially selected team of fine, talented individuals who have promised to treat your work with the utmost respect. Imago officials with observe to ensure that the competition is free and fair.

Please send your submissions (and or queries) to: before 31 May 2009.

Remember that Imago Literary Journal publishes the work of University of Cape Town past and present, students and staff, strictly.
