RIP Cecil Skotnes (1926-2009)

Thelma, Cecil and Pippa Skotnes

According to the Mercury, this weekend saw the passing of one of South Africa’s great artists, Cecil Skotnes, at age 82. Skotnes is known for his work at Roarke’s Drift and Polly Street art centres and recognisable by a distinctive style dominated by sharp coloured woodprints.

In 2003, the South African government awarded him the Order of the Ikhamanga (Gold) for his contribution to South African art. He is survived by his wife, Thelma (pictured left), and his daughter, Pippa (pictured right).
