Grasshopper metamorphosis

Imago (n): The final stage in the metamorphosis of an insect

Tamlin Blake’s Private Spaces – 5 to 29 November

Private Spaces

Curious, Whetstone and Frankley is currently holding an exhibition by artist Tamlin Blake called Private Spaces. Besides being a stunning exhibition, Curious-style, Private Spaces will also be the backdrop for the launch of Imago 2008.

If you can’t make it to the Imago launch on 14th November at the gallery then at least come and visit the exhibition, it’s on until the 29th. And includes a fishtank with some rather cool fish, for sale of course:

“Private Spaces” is Tamlin’s curious and organic interpretation of privacy and maternal intimacy. Her reverse glass painting and her beaded baby skins are tactile and sometimes discomforting in their corporeal and substantially natural form.Tamlin Blake’s unaffected reflection of the occasionally sanguine processes of the body belies a powerful message.

Tamlin Blake majored in sculpture during her undergraduate studies, and then specialized in botanical art and received both her Honours- (1999) and Masters Degree (2001) from the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa.

She has exhibited extensively and received many grants and awards, among them a Brett Kebble Merit award in 2003. Her work is currently being exhibited in the Spier Contemporary Exhibition, South Africa.

Her work can be found in the Contemporary Collection for The New Hollard House at Villa Arcadia, the Spier Holdings Contemporary Art Collection and the collections of South African Breweries, Absolut Vodka, Nandos (UK) and the Bead Merchants of Africa.

Examples of Tamlin’s botanical artwork canbe found in the collections of the University of Stellenbosch Botany Department, Kirstenbosch Botanic Gardens in Cape Town and the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, USA. As well as the Water Colour Society of Ireland at the University of Limerick and the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, Tasmania, Australia.
